About The Charity
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) of Georgia/South Carolina's mission begins with the word “cure.” To cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. How do we cure blood cancers?
- Research - LLS proudly funds research across the country that is focused on not only curing blood cancers but on finding better, safer cures. In 2020, despite the odds, the FDA approved 17 new treatment options for blood cancers. LLS helped fund 14 of those 17.
- Access - What’s the point of curing cancer if patients can’t access or afford it? LLS stands proudly behind patients and their families to ensure that everyone that hears the words “you have cancer” have access to treatment options. Through financial assistance programs, counseling, clinical trial navigation and peer to peer support, the goal of LLS is to be there from the day of diagnosis through s person’s survivorship.
- Advocacy - LLS advocates for patients, healthcare reform, and affordable treatment options in every state capitol and in Washington D.C. The LLS president and CEO, Dr. Lou DeGennaro says often that the organization “unapologetically takes money from pharmaceutical partners to put it directly back into the hands of patients.” LLS is the voice of blood cancer patients across the country and globally. The latest project of LLS is the Children’s Initiative. Through this Initiative LLS will incentivize and drive forward advancement for pediatric blood cancers. Kids are not just small adults which means that treating their cancer isn’t just a smaller dose of what it takes to treat an adult. Later this year the LLS PedAL Clinical Trial will launch across the globe, including locally at the Memorial Health Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital. This Trial will be the first of its kind, giving children across the world the opportunity to receive the latest and greatest treatment options available to children with acute leukemia. If you or anyone you know is diagnosed with a blood cancer, the local LLS staff is here for you. Please never hesitate to reach out for support.
